Why Destiny 2 PVP is Good

Why is Destiny 2 PVP Uniquely Good?

I think the PVE is what made ( past tense ) the PVP aspect of destiny 2 fun.

To be clear, you don't need the PVE to have that quality of PVP. But it was because of this hybrid approach, that the valuable aspects of PVP were discovered.

What was perhaps accidentally discovered, is the benefit of having an extremely diverse, dynamic, ever changing,  and perhaps even impossible to balance, set of weapons and abilities.

You are more likely to get diverse PVP if your weapons and abilities are also being designed to handle role based  fights and raids.

And so a uniquely fun and engaging PVP experience was the side effect of trying to merge the two aspects of the game.

But understanding where the draw is, you no longer need to support both aspects of gameplay.

It’s like evolution vs design.

Evolutionary processes are sometimes needed to discover or  inspire a good design.

But once you know why design is good, you don’t need evolution anymore. You can just design…

In this case, the great pvp of destiny 2 evolved from the hybrid pve/pvp model… but now that we know what aspects of that are contributing to a healthy and vibrant pvp experience, we can just take that and build it from scratch, without the PVE  portion.

In theory anyway.

Design weapons and abilities as though you were going to use them for massive PVE raids.

But then don't build the raids :)

Honestly Overwatch was, to my understanding, similar, as there was a lot of work before overwatch that went into a much larger project that included a lot more PVE aspects.

So again, it was because of the broader world that was designed, that the smaller world had so much depth of game play.

Now overwatch is in my opinion, a bit too cute, and a bit too aggressively balanced. For that reason I prefer Destiny 2. But the problem with Destiny 2 is that as a pvp only player, it’s really painful to have to grind out PVE to get a few cool weapons to use in PVP.

If I could get the best of both worlds, a more adult oriented, less tightly balanced version of overwatch, with a fixed and finite set of classes and races, then I’d buy and I’d subscribe.

By the way, I think that the concept of writing more than you intend to use, applies to not just gameplay, but stories and paintings and all kinds of creative work. I think it’s important to build out more than you intend to use. Not unlike Lord of the Rings, which had far more lore and history and culture than what shows up in say  “The Hobbit”. But the sense of depth and scale is there even if you don’t really understand why.

I think the key to adding depth to any creative work is to build more than you intend to show.
