Tweet Theory

I tweet about #Software patterns and #Architecture. But I don't read those tweets. They're boring.  Also, that's not why I'm on twitter. If I wanted to study , I'd open a book. On the other hand tweets need to provide value, and software is what I know. Hmm 🤔  Then again, I love tweets that rail on React.  React is for pansies. 🥲 We need a #reactsucks hash that I can follow. Actually there's some really good stuff in the #SoftwareArchitecture hash.  ( By the way, I need to get in the habit of tweeting #SoftwareArchitecture" I was afraid being more specific would narrow my reach but without the software prefix, I'm 100% in front of the wrong people. No one watching #Architecture is expecting anything software related and may even be put off by it. So Be more specific with your tweets ) I should follow it.  It's probably better than like, news. But does the fact that I'm not naturally compelled to follow it, mean that it's bad to tweet about...

What's in a Name?

I don't ever want to walk into something that goes @ bing . That sounds painful. Like a Ned Ryerson. I'd love to walk into a @ google though. That sounds interesting. The problem is the name @ Microsoft . Bing is something you guessed right. Google is something you know.

I want an #MMO that is just boss fights.

I want an #MMO that is just boss fights.  Why is that not a thing?  Is it because the mind numbing level grind and poorly written story missions are more replayable? I'd rather just have raid progression. I'm not even sure you need a social area. Everyone should be in the raid or in the foyer preparing for the raid, all the time. Why do I have to ride to another village or fly to another planet to upgrade my stuff or swap out my gear?  It has to be a time sink.  I'm not sure you need time sinks. I think somehow, we got this idea in our heads that MMOs needed time sinks. I'm not sure they do. They could just be all the fun parts ( i.e. the raids and dungeons  and pvp ). All activities get a little foyer. You sign in and go to that foyer to wait for your friends to log in, and then you walk into the encounter. You level up by raiding. Start with the raids you can beat, get your drops, balance and spec and move on to bigger and harder raids.   The downsid...

Why Destiny 2 PVP is Good

Why is Destiny 2 PVP Uniquely Good? I think the PVE is what made ( past tense ) the PVP aspect of destiny 2 fun.  To be clear, you don't need the PVE to have that quality of PVP. But it was because of this hybrid approach, that the valuable aspects of PVP were discovered.  What was perhaps accidentally discovered, is the benefit of having an extremely diverse, dynamic, ever changing,  and perhaps even impossible to balance, set of weapons and abilities.  You are more likely to get diverse PVP if your weapons and abilities are also being designed to handle role based  fights and raids. And so a uniquely fun and engaging PVP experience was the side effect of trying to merge the two aspects of the game. But understanding where the draw is, you no longer need to support both aspects of gameplay. It’s like evolution vs design. Evolutionary processes are sometimes needed to discover or  inspire a good design. But once you know why design is good, you don’t...

Timers are Lifesavers

A timer is one of the best things you can own. Every day we are inundated with small untracked, unmeasured tasks. Timers help you quantify and optimize these tasks. The even empower you with multiple tasks in parallel. Side note, we need a company that makes really chill timers. Life Systems

Awkward Texts

Today I told my Tattoo artist that my recent work was healing well and looking good. But because he's a Tattoo artist, I wanted to make it to sound cooler.  So I said, "Just giving you that info for your brain space".  See, in my mind that was cooler.... Anyway, now I'm afraid that he thinks I was saying he is spacey..  Which is not at all what I meant.  I have no idea how to take it back though.. just have to leave it...

I Can't Finish The Wheel of Time

Thom Merrilin slaps a drunk  Elayne  in the wheel of time to "knock some sense into her" or some such nonsense.  It's been a few months since I put the book down on that note. And it's not the first time I've read the series to that point, hoping to finish it. I can't get passed that. It's not that the character took that action. We need to be able to write bad characters that do bad things. It's that, I don't think the author, Robert Jordan, knows it was wrong... It's played off in the story like she was utterly deserving  of it and as though Thom, who is kind of an anti-hero, was 100% right and justified in that action.  I don't think anyone who understands what a grave line that is, would ever cross it for any reason.  It's not like a line that you cross in some circumstances, but not in others.  You are either okay with it, or your not.  Robert Jordan appears, based on the way this was written, to be okay with it.  And based on that...

TV is Too Long

Stories need to have an end.  Stretching content is bad. It was bad for Game of Thrones. It's bad for MMORPG s. Both of which needed to sustain consumer engagement for a long time. A better strategy for MMOs or long running TV series may be to tell multiple stories in the same universe.

Capslock is a dumb key.

Capslock is a dumb key.  It inverts muscle memory. It's like a switch on your bike that makes turning your handlebars left make you go right.  It's time to kill capslock.....

Virtual Reality Will Take Off When This Happens

Dear @Meta , VR Needs to actually give me high bandwidth social access.  That does NOT MEAN phone calls.  I need to not CALL my coworker, but rather turn to the right, tap them on the shoulder and say "hey Jonny, look what I can do." #VR #AR #XR  Oh also, it needs to be comparable to a pair of sunglasses in terms in terms of size, style and ease of use.

Sonic Boom has the Best Writing

"I'd corroborate that, but it's illegal to check books out of the libery" - Knuckles ( From the Mayor Knuckles episode ) https://sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Mayor_Knuckles  This line changed my life. Because the setup was flawless and just so delightfully subtle. The delivery so flat and unassuming. They're not beating you over the head with it. They respect your intelligence. They know you got it.  Honestly I love watching this show with the fam. It's some of the best writing out there.  I'll update this post with more quotes and reasons later, but if you haven't , go check out this show.

Why Video Game Dialog is Bad

* Characters don't speak naturally.  * Scenes are loaded with exposition. Leave the backstory for the wiki. * Dialog is too pristine, too polished. Sometimes characters should NOT chose the perfect response.      (NOTE I've also seen the opposite though, where characters are completely informal in a setting where they should and would be speaking with greater formality. The key is not confusing the characters intent to be formal, with their ability to speak flawlessly ) * Characters  only have "big flaws". Characters only have universe threatening flaws. No one has simple flaws like they are lazy, messy, unhealthy, or vulgar.  I think that's about it but if I think of something else I'll update this post.
